5 Tips To Find That Perfect Piece of Art

Nothing finishes a room like a piece of art. Often the focal point, art can set the mood of a space, from calm and tranquil to bold and invigorating — depending on the piece, of course! — so selecting the right painting can feel like a daunting task. But no matter what, the right art will bring you happiness every single time you gaze upon it. Here are some tips to help you find that perfect piece.

  1.  Here at Coco Blanca, while we always suggest neutrals for your couches or flooring, we urge people to use their walls for their eclectic choice.  Art is a place for expression through color, content, and texture.
  2.  Get to know the artist.  This will help you understand the content of the work and the context around the piece.  You will appreciate the end product so much more.
  3.  If you can’t forget about a piece of art, then you know it is a piece you should have.  Don’t wait too long to purchase.  Art is one of a kind – you don’t want someone else to be the owner of the piece you dream about!
  4.  Don’t be afraid to ask the artist to commission a piece for you…but don’t ask the artist to stray too far from their style or try to control them too much.  This is a recipe for disaster.
  5.  Find out what is happening in the arts where you live, then show up!  Alexandria is a fabulous city for the arts.  We have several art galleries, the Torpedo Factory, and huge art shows.

But start at Coco Blanca, by checking out Martha Spak’s art featured in this article.

My favorite piece we have at the moment!

We love Martha Spak’s art because it adds that accent of color to our neutral décor, creating a serene environment.  She paints landscapes, seascapes, and still life paintings in oils, capturing the essence of the subject and recording it simply with light and warmth.  Each painting portrays a mood.  As an artists, she hopes the share with others the sense of peace she feels when she paints to provide calm happiness.  With this in mind she creates timeless works that will bring enjoyment for years to come.

She began painting more than fifteen years ago and gathers ideas everywhere – a vivid sunset, tranquil water, a beautiful keepsake from traveling, or a family heirloom.  She paints en plein air and in the studio. Martha prefers to paint in oils because the richness and thickness of the medium allow her to build up the texture of the painting and give weight to the work.  She likes to use layers of thin color to reach a vibrant and translucent glaze.

Prices, shown below, vary depending on the size of the painting and Martha is very happy to create a commissioned piece to accommodate size and color of your room.

12” x 16” | $675

16” x 20” | $995
