The Scottish Christmas Walk Parade is right around the corner, and with it an entire weekend packed full of fun, festive events that Alexandria residents look forward to all year long! A local tradition for 46 years now, the Scottish Christmas Walk Weekend (SCCW) is designed to celebrate Old Town Alexandria’s rich Scottish heritage with activities for all ages that kick off the season and get everyone in the holiday spirit.
There is a fantastic mission behind all the fun: the Scottish Christmas Walk and Parade, coordinated by the Junior Friends of the Campagna Center, is the largest fundraising activity for the Campagna Center. Proceeds from all events benefit the Center’s core programs, which help children and families from cradle to career by providing high-quality early learning experiences, preschool programs, enrichment learning and guidance through high school, and English language learning for adults. The Campagna Center is Alexandria’s leading not-for-profit organization, helps more than 2,000 children and families every day, and is a great reason to enjoy all that the SCWW has to offer!
The SCWW festivities and fundraising have actually already begun with the ongoing annual Heather and Greens Sale. Stunning holiday wreaths, garlands, and fresh heather bundles are available for purchase at the Campagna Center (418 South Washington Street) on Friday, December 2nd from 9am-4pm and Saturday, December 3rd from 9am-4pm, but you can also pre-order online here.
The events really get started on Friday, December 2nd with the Taste of Scotland, a special event where you can sample a variety of Scotches straight from Scottish distilleries. Also available for tasting are ales and beer, wine, and food from Society Fair. Located at the Atrium Building at 277 South Washington Street, this event really kicks off all the fun in a spirited way. Find tickets here.
The Taste of Scotland is also a drop-off site for The Campagna Center’s holiday toy drive. Between now and December 9th, the Campagna Center is collecting donations of new, unwrapped toys for children in the Early Childhood Programs (two months to five years of age) to help brighten their holiday season. If you can’t make it to the Taste of Scotland or forget to bring your gift with you, not to worry! The Patterson Group will pick up toys from anyone’s home in the Alexandria area and match toy for toy every gift donated. If you’d like to donate, please email maria@pattersonrealestategroup.com, letting us know that you will be leaving the gifts by your front door at a designated time between the weekday hours of 9am-5pm, and a member of our team will be by shortly to pick them up!
Then comes Saturday, December 3rd, many Alexandrians’ favorite day of the year! Start the day by joining us at our office at 400 South Washington Street between 9-11am for food and beverages before heading over to King Street to watch the parade, where you’ll see marching units filled with Scottish Clans, Scottish dancers, reenactment groups, Scottie dogs, dignitaries, classic cars, and Santa Claus (!!!), with melodious bagpipes and drums throughout. The parade starts at 11am at Saint Asaph and Wolfe Streets and ends at Market Square with a massed band concert. It will take place rain or shine!
Last but certainly not least is the Holiday Designer and Home Tour from 11am-4pm on Saturday, December 3rd. If you love Old Town’s beautiful historic homes and have always wanted to see inside some of them, here is your chance. Stroll through Old Town’s most splendid homes, all decked out for the holidays by acclaimed interior designers and local florists. We’ll be offering a special preview in a post next week, so stay tuned! Tickets are available here, or you can buy them at any of the houses on the day of for $5 more.
The fun’s not over after the weekend, though. On Saturday, December 10th from 10am-12pm, you can Deck the Halls with Santa! Get the children involved with an afternoon filled with arts and crafts, musical entertainment, and, of course, a visit from Santa. This event takes place at Norton Hall in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Find more information here.
Can’t wait to see you there! Thank you in advance to all who donate to the Campagna Center, whether it be in the form of toys or ticket sales!
