Golden Globes: The Best, Worst, and What We’d Wear in Real Life

Two are among the region’s most renowned stylists, and one is a self-professed awards show junkie known to throw an amazing Oscar party, and they all love (and maybe obsess over) the red carpet. And why not? Amazing fashion, beautiful styling, jewels that are just beyond (Tracee Ellis Ross’ henna-esque diamond rings, anyone?)…it’s aspirational, a modern-day fairy tale, really. But what if Alicia McCaslin of The Tulle Box (and TSALT), Marisa González of DC Style Factory, Amy Rutherford of Red Barn Mercantile had to pick what Golden Globes styles they would *actually* wear? Does that change their perception? Do favorite looks translate to real-life choices? Do they even agree on what the best looks were? Yes and no….

Amy

My favorites: Jessica Biel and Amy Adams (and a few more)

Jessica Biel in Elie Saab and Amy Adams in Tom Ford

I have a tie for my favorites: Jessica Biel and Amy Adams. I could never in my wildest imagination wear Jessica’s dress, but with the right armor underneath I could wear Amy’s dress.  Both dresses were stunning. Jessica’s was interesting without being over the top and sexy but still very sweet.  Amy’s was sleek, edgy, and struck every right note as only Tom Ford can do.  And, as an aside, I’d feel good in Evan Rachel Wood’s tux too. It was spot-on cool.

Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton

Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton was right on brand — literally and figuratively. She has a signature look and this was it.  It was lovely.

Emma Stone in Valentino

I’d say the same for Emma Stone. She clearly knows what works for her and this did. Before the show I had pretty much decided she was going to be my favorite, but after seeing everyone she is only a runner-up this evening. The stars instead of flowers was fresh, which put it in my plus category.

What I wouldn’t be caught dead in: Natalie Portman

Now for the worst dressed… Sophia Vergara, Lily Collins, and Nicole Kidman were bad, but the worst was Natalie Portman. Someone needs to tell her the film is over and she’s taking the method acting a bit too far. She is far too young to look that matronly. The hair is severe and the dress looks like a tent. I get she’s pregnant, but she can — and has — done better.

Caitriona Balfe

Look at Caitriona Balfe (who is also one of my favorites) for how to do it right.

And finally, Ryan Gosling wins everything hands down for his speech. Hey Girl…

Marisa

My favorites: Ruth Negga and Jessica Biel

What I Would Personally Wear: Evan Rachel Wood in custom Altuzarra

I love when women wear tuxedos and her short ombré hair. And the nod to David Bowie! I love this entire look!

What I wouldn’t be caught dead in: Carrie Underwood in Iris Serban

The ruffle detailing at the top makes me think of buttercream frosting floral cakes and the back is underwhelming.

Alicia

My favorites: Gina Rodriguez, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Lily Collins

Gina Rodriguez in Naeem Khan, Lily Collins & Tracee Ellis Ross, each in Zuhair Murad

What I Would Personally Wear: Olivia Culpo in Zuhair Murad

There is something that speaks to my bohemian side about this dress — and I love all of the embroidery! This one skipped the red carpet but I discovered it post entry into the Globes and fell immediately in love with entire look…for me, what makes a look successful is that it feels inherent to the woman. This dress looks spectacular on Olivia Culpo in my opinion.

What I wouldn’t be caught dead in: Sarah Jessica Parker in Vera Wang

This was a tragedy on so many levels but if I had to wear it…that would be the biggest tragedy of all! There is something that makes SJP look corpse-like in this dress — as though it sucked the life out of her!

I totally agree about SJP’s style lately. Her makeup has been making her look especially unattractive lately, emphasizing her small, close-set eyes and prominent nose, aging her unnecessarily. The dress….a total failure. Shapeless, ill-fitted, disastrous.

Agree that Olivia Culpo’s Zuhair Murad dress was a masterpiece. She looked like a fairy tale queen. And Evan Rachel Wood’s tuxedo was perfection for her.
