3 Shopping Secrets for Quality Cashmere (+ How To Care for It)

As I mentioned last week, quality cashmere is an investment.  For the price, you want to make sure you are purchasing a piece that will last a long time! We have taken the mystery out of choosing quality cashmere by devising a few simple steps.

1) Read the label

This is a no brainer.  Check for “100% cashmere” or “all cashmere.”   If it is not a pure cashmere garment, it will list the percentage of blends.  For a sweater that feels similar in softness, and not as expensive, pick a garment that is at least 70 percent cashmere and mixed with other natural fibers such as silk.

2) Feel the Weight and Touch It

Hold it in your hands.  The heavier/thicker the garment, the more expensive.  Remember the two-ply rule! However, lightweight pieces can be used for three seasons so don’t pass it over simply because it lacks heft.  Also, as you touch the fabric, it should be supremely soft.  Of course, there is an exception to the rule!  Too soft and it may be over-milled, causing it to fall apart easily.

3) Turn It Inside Out

It is pretty simple…the tighter the weave, the longer it will last!  If needed, hold the sweater up to a light to examine the weave.  Also, give the sweater a slight tug.  The fabric should easily spring back to its original shape.

Caring for your Cashmere

Hand wash your cashmere!  Use a mild detergent and soak it in lukewarm water for approximately 10 minutes.  Carefully removed the garment and roll it in a towel to remove excess water.  Lay flat dry.

Always store your cashmere folded, never hung, which will stretch your knitwear.  Also, add cedar blocks to keep the bugs at bay!

Piling is inevitable.  You can use sharp scissors or gently use a sweater comb to remove the clusters of yarn.

Darn your cashmere!  Don’t throw your cashmere in the trash if a hole appears.  If you can weld a needle you can easily sew the hole closed.  The repaired hole will blend in with the texture your cashmere.  Afraid?  Ask your local dry cleaner!
