Commit to a year of making! You may have seen #yearofmaking on Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook. It’s a movement to commit to making something every day. This doesn’t have to be a huge and overwhelming commitment. You can bake, cook, sew, draw, or knit. It’s a way to commit to using your hands to create something of your own.
We may be a bit biased at fibre space™, but for good reason. Here’s why your #yearormaking should include knitting:
1) Learning to knit is a great way to expand your skills and learn something new. You would be amazed to know how much this repetitive craft actually exercises your brain and keeps you sharp while forcing you to revisit some old elementary math skills that you might not be using regularly – maybe even some algebra! And even if you already know how to knit, learning is never over. What I love most about my craft is just how much I still can explore and learn from it, even as a lifelong knitter.
2) Knitting is incredibly relaxing and soothing. The repetitive act of creating the knit stitch over and over again helps to slow you down after a busy day yet plays right into our constant need to be “doing.”
3) Knitting improves motor function and hand-eye coordination. Studies have shown that hand crafts have benefits for everything from arthritis to Parkinson’s disease.
4) Knitting can help you kick a bad habit. Do you check your phone too much? Are you trying to stop snacking? Are you picking at your fingernails? Are you trying to quit smoking? Putting some needles and wool in your hands can help you stop doing any of these things! Ask me how I know…
5) And the best reason for picking up needles this year – you have a yarn shop right here in Old Town! Your new craft doesn’t have to be a solo activity. The community support, classes, and supplies are all within reach at fibre space. Knitting is an incredibly social activity. Visit our shop on a Thursday evening, for example, and you will find both new and experienced stitchers gathered in our lounge to hang out and create. Our classes (of six students at the most) are a great way to get started on the craft, add to your existing skills, or just meet other people while polishing your craft.
So if you do become part of the #yearofmaking movement, stop by and see us. If stitching wasn’t one of your resolutions this year, perhaps I’ve convinced you that the craft can help you accomplish some of your other goals for the year.
