What We’re Watching and Reading

As many of us have a little more time on our hands than usual, it seems we’re all on the lookout for the next great binge and/or book recommendation. If you’ve already made it through Netflix’s Tiger King, we thought we’d help out and let you know what we are currently reading and watching. In our household we can’t get enough of The Morning Show currently and I recently cracked open American Wife by Curtis Sittenfeld (although to be honest, I am not very far into it as I am usually quick to turn on the TV over grabbing a book). What are you doing to occupy your time in between work, taking care of the kids, and taking care of yourself? Leave us a comment and let us know. In the meantime, here are a few of our recommendations when you’re in the mood to binge…

Alex, Ivy Lane Living: I’m currently watching and loving The Outsider on HBO.

Ali, ALH Style: Love is Blind on Netflix. I can’t stop watching.

Charlene, TSALT: I’ve been working my way through Novel/Fiction Pulitzer Prize winners in order of award year, beginning with the first, His Family by Ernest Poole, which was awarded in 1918. I’ve made my way through the 1926 winner, Arrowsmith by Sinclair Lewis. They were all wonderful, but my favorite so far is So Big by Edna Ferber (1925 winner). Just cracked open Early Autumn by Louis Bromfield. Disclaimer: I started my way through this list several months ago. I’ll be straying from the list of winners as soon as my copy of Doctor Zhivago arrives from Old Town Books!

Elizabeth, The Hive + The Shoe Hive: A few weekends ago I was supposed to take my daughter to see Mean Girls and Six on Broadway. She is completely obsessed. So, we are watching as many musicals we can find (Hairspray was last night) and we also have subscribed to www.broadwayhd.com and you can watch Broadway shows. I know it isn’t the same as the real thing, but happy she is learning about some classics. I know one day we will get to go back but for now this will do.

Maura, Monday’s Child: I’m watching Tiger King on Netflix! It’s so good!! And for books, I’m reading Girl, Wash Your Face by Rachel Hollis.

Tamara, TSALT: My daughter Keeley and I are binging Law and Order SVU. We challenge each other picking out the famous stars on it and which other shows they are on. We do this while painting each other’s nails (we are clearly amateurs…at least I am) and making silly videos. Keeleys recent TikTok mentioning She’s Unique just hit over 280k hits. Woohoo. Shop local. Support local.

Sarah Phillips, The Scout Guide Alexandria: Currently reading: Girl Stop Apologizing by Rachel Hollis – love her books! They are all so insightful and aspirational. Currently binging: Mad Men – Late to the game I know but almost done!

Celeste, Kiskdadee: Being from New Mexico, I loved watching Breaking Bad to see sites from home. One scene early in the series was actually filmed at my high school. Not sure why I didn’t immediately start watching Better Call Saul (the prequel) when it came out so that’s what I’m binging on now. We finished up season one in no time flat…on to season two now. As for reading, I just started The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid. It started off a bit slow but it’s starting to get good!

Megan & Katie, Mint Condition + 529 Kids Consign: The ladies at Mint Condition are watching a variety of things right now. While Katie is quarantined with Ruby waiting for big brother to arrive, she’s watched Frozen over 100 times! I, on the other hand am finally watching Big Little Lies (what has taken me so long)?! Also putting off the finale of Schitt’s Creek because I don’t want it to be over!!

Leah, Boxwood: Just finished Jenny Offill’s new novel, Weather. It was delightfully smart, funny, and sad at the same time – a great escape from reality. I’m also re-reading some of my all-time favorites including Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides and A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara. Only recommended if you’re like me and love books that make you sob uncontrollably.

Angela, Bellacara: I’m going to be watching Ozark on Netflix. I first found it a while back on a sick day and became quickly engrossed. Jason Bateman and Laura Linney are so good in this story about a financial planner whose money laundering scheme has gone wrong. The fractured family is forced to reconnect while trying to pay back a substantial amount of money to a Mexican drug lord. The third season just dropped, and I can’t wait.

Rosana, DC Style Factory: I am reading Dressed: The Philosophy of Clothes by Shahidha Bari. I am loving the part about not only what clothing says about us, but what they don’t say about us. One example is Steve Jobs and his uniform of black turtlenecks. His clothing was almost a barrier as if to say, “You won’t get a read on me from what I am wearing.” Since we are living in our home all the time now, we wanted to change some of our normal routine. For example, we don’t really watch TV during the week. But being home 24-7, we wanted to break up our days spent moving from room to room. Each evening after dinner we watch a TV show together. Right now we are loving The Masked Singer on Fox and Hulu, Lego Master on Fox and also Hulu, and The English Game on Netflix.
