Waxed Canvas – Why It’s Your New Favorite Bag Material

With warm weather finally here, I know that I am finding my way to our waterfront with my daughter and our dogs for lazy afternoons in our new gorgeous park spaces. I don’t want to ruin my Rag & Bone crossbody bag from the Hive on a waterfront nature adventure, and a basic canvas tote is really uncomfortable to drag around all day on one shoulder. My go-to bag for packing up snacks, water, and dog supplies is a waxed canvas backpack from Twill & Print. They are handcrafted by a small woman-owned company in Quebec, Canada.

Waxed canvas is incredibly durable and gets even prettier with wear and tear. It is also completely water-resistant. Since this bag is made with sturdy 12 oz. canvas, it holds its shape nicely on your back or when you drop it onto the grass. It is designed for crafters to take their knitting projects on the go, but the generous eight storage pockets inside will spoil anyone who totes around a lot of tiny objects on a daily basis. If you find that handbags never have enough pockets, start looking at the ones knitters and crocheters carry around! We demand pockets.

Did I mention that this bag converts from backpack to crossbody and back again? Two leather loops with D-rings on either side are where the strap attaches for a tote bag or crossbody configuration. The strap is 58 inches at its longest and is adjustable in length. To convert the bag into a backpack, thread the strap through the back leather attachment and secure the strap buckles to the bottom d-rings.

A Pittsburgh native with a degree in international development, she moved to the D.C. area to find a job and quickly established a career in non profit management and fundraising. For extra cash, she decided to turn her hobby into a job and taught knitting classes in the evening at area shops. With a heavy dose of sarcasm and a tough love style of teaching, Danielle quickly developed a following of students – busy D.C. professionals looking for a creative outlet. In October 2006, she struck out on her own with Knit-a-Gogo, Inc. – offering knitting classes and events all over the D.C. metro area. Before she knew it, Knit-a-Gogo had grown out of control and Danielle moved to the next natural step – a full service yarn shop. In July 2009 fibre space was born and has been rockin’ ever since. When she isn’t behind the scenes with a mocha in hand, Danielle is hanging with her daughter or lobbying for small business needs at City Hall.
