Proving, Once Again, that Virginia is for Lovers

Sometimes I worry that I’ve watered down my love. I throw out love for objects in Boxwood like beads at a Mardi Gras parade. Sort of like exclamation points – the more I use them – the more ridiculous and flighty I sound!

But then I remember that Virginia is for Lovers and has been ever since the iconic 1968 tourism advertising campaign. And when it comes down to it, the passion that Virginians have for their craft – brewing beer, woodworking, raising vines, painting, breeding horses, etc. – translates to love.

So, I promise that I truly and deeply love this latest Boxwood limited edition, the Elizabeth charcuterie board from Selby & Co.

Joanna and I met Suzanne Selby at a show in New York last January – she handcrafts each board from her studio in Stafford, Virginia, and selects wood from a local lumber yard.

We immediately wanted to bring her boards into the shop (but then you know what happened). So we set aside some budget for this year and invested in stunning dark walnut boards in two sizes, 12 inch ($175) and 15 inch ($225).

They are designed and cut to emulate fine English silver salvers. I admit I did not know what a salver was – but Google informed me that salvers are flat, handle-less platters used to present food and drink. Similar to a tray but without a rim or handles.

Elizabeth is ideal for serving, chopping, or display. A perfect backdrop for breads, meats, and cheeses. I need one as a statement piece to “elevate” my salt, pepper, and olive oil on a daily basis. I think you would love one too!!!

Over the past 15 years, I’ve covered the major branches of D.C. careers – political campaigns, Senate press office, advertising sales, and strategic communications. But after I had my two kids, I knew I wanted to do something that truly reflected my desire for creative, colorful design. Luckily, I stumbled into a shop on South Royal Street in early 2019 and met Joanna Szczerban. We opened Boxwood in April to offer Old Town a fresh take on home decor and gifts – and we haven’t looked back.

Boxwood was born out of the idea that our homes should be as vibrant and colorful as the people who live in them. So our decorative items and gifts bring a fresh, modern look to Old Town – everything from pillows and table linens to furniture painted with Annie Sloan® Chalk Paint®.
