‘Tis the Season for Magical Partnerships

Early the other evening, I headed to Harrod’s to look at their coffee machines as ours had just broken that morning, and what excitement was in the air as I arrived. A small crowd of joyous people were gathering around an antique car with a Burberry license plate parked next to a six-meter-high Christmas tree outside Harrod’s brand new Door 5 Grand Entrance. They all seemed to be waiting in anticipation for something or someone. The press and all kinds of photographers and security were setting up as well.

As I made my way through the crowd, I couldn’t help notice the window displays in Harrod’s. Each one was part of a larger story—but exclusively Burberry. As I started taking pictures, a young lady wearing a gorgeous Burberry coat greeted me and asked my opinion about the display. “Magical!”

She quickly explained that she was part of the design team behind this new Harrod’s-Burberry Christmas campaign collaboration—A Very British Fairy Tale—and she encouraged me to hurry back to the Christmas tree because 27-year-old British actress Lily James was going to be arriving any minute to switch on the lights of the tree and the storefront windows. Why Lily? Perhaps because she’s Burberry’s star, alongside Sienna Miller, in The Tale of Thomas Burberry.

It was all so very exciting! After the tree lighting, I began clicking away at the elaborate window display. Taking over Harrod’s 29 windows, Burberry’s campaign tells a fairy tale adventure of two children on a snow-swept English country estate—flying cars, secret passageways, floating bathtubs, woodland friends, mannequins dressed in elegant and festive holiday wear, children anticipating Christmas with baked goods and cakes ready to be savored. Inside one window, I noticed a private launch party going on inside Burberry’s section of Harrod’s, where I imagine Lily James and Sienna Miller were toasting the successful evening with the Director of creative marketing, Deborah Bee.

Partnerships are magical, especially when they share such traditional values as do these two iconic British luxury brands.
