The Sun Is Not A Joke

Guest Post by Danielle Romanetti of fibre space

A few years ago, I noticed that the mole on my forehead was bleeding. I didn’t think much of it until it wouldn’t heal. I went to my dermatologist, who was pretty sure it was cancer. She took a chunk of my forehead and sent it off to be biopsied. I spent a few days clicking back through photos on social media to figure out if it had always been there, as I was convinced it had. But no… It had not. The mole had appeared a couple of years prior and kept getting larger over time until it eventually started bleeding and wouldn’t stop. Sure enough, it was skin cancer. This diagnosis and the subsequent procedure to remove it immediately changed my skincare routine. I had always put on sunscreen at the beach, but it wasn’t part of my daily life, despite how much time I spend walking around Old Town in the sun. I went to Bellacara and bought the Coola Classic Face Organic Sunscreen and tried very hard to work it into my skin routine. But honestly, it just wasn’t consistently happening. It went on vacations with me, and I used it diligently while on a trip, but it just wasn’t making it into my morning face and makeup routine.

A few weeks ago, I was back in Bellacara and checking out the amazing new and expanded Coola products, which are all organic. I grabbed the Full Spectrum 360 Sun Silk Drops. I was intrigued. It turns out that this little vile of liquid can be “dropped” into your regular lotion or foundation to boost it and make it protective. It provides broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection and helps mitigate the effects of HEV light (aka blue light), IR, and pollution. Since I can drop it into my Indie Lee Superfruit Facial Cream, it’s really easy to work it into my morning skincare routine. It’s been a game changer for me, and I’ve been using it every single day since picking it up!

This testimonial from Danielle is so important. I remember when Danielle came in one day, and I asked if she had had her mole looked at by a dermatologist. She told me it was nothing and she had had it for years. Fast forward, and I was asking about the bandage on her forehead. A lot of us have similarly ignored our bodies and what they were trying to tell us, just as many of us live in a form of denial or not me syndrome. Daily sunscreen is important! Let’s all be proactive when it comes to sunscreen rather than reactive.

I have been a beauty junkie for what seems like forever, but before I did anything about it, I went to law school. (Yes, my life is a little like the reverse of Legally Blonde.) Then, I worked as a prosecutor in Sonoma County after which I moved to the DC area with my husband in ’97. I served as Majority Counsel to the Senate Banking Committee followed by a year-long stint at a lobbying firm. You get the picture. It was then that I decided to act on my dream of becoming an entrepreneur. Finding my favorite beauty products proved to be impossible without stepping foot in a mall–the horror. So, I decided to bring my favorites to Alexandria. A few trips to New York and a flight to France and Bellacara was born in March 2000.

Located in historic Old Town Alexandria, for more than 17 years Bellacara has been Northern Virginia's preeminent boutique for high end cosmetic, skincare and haircare products. At Bellacara you will find premiere beauty products that have been carefully edited by the store’s owner, Angela Sitilides, who personally tests all the products sold in store.
