Sunburns And Sun Poisoning – What Items To Keep In Your Arsenal

It’s spring, and it’s the best time of year. The sun is out, the weather is warming, and it hasn’t yet become oppressively humid. In fact, it’s so nice out that you may be tempted to run around with no sunscreen. It doesn’t seem or feel hot enough to be concerned. The yard and the flower beds are beckoning after all. But don’t be fooled… this is exactly when you’re likely to get your worst sunburn or, even worse… sun poisoning.

I’m not going to regale you with endless warnings and supplications to please wear your sunscreen. I’ve done that many times. Now, this time, I’m just going to tell you what may help if you’ve forgotten to do just that and are now suffering. A friend of mine recently had a family excursion to the beach, and in their excitement to be away from the house and enjoying the beach, they completely forgot to apply sunscreen. The weather was temperate, it was sunny but not blazing hot. In their eagerness to enjoy the beach after months of being indoors, they stayed in the sun far longer than they realized. The next morning, they woke up red, their skin sensitive to touch, and they felt ill. In the coming days, their skin blistered. Aside from applying Calamine lotion and taking ibuprofen, they didn’t know what to do. She called to see if I had anything that could help, and of course, I did.

Firstly, Coola makes an amazing product called Environmental Repair Plus Radical Recovery After-Sun Lotion. I know, long name. This intensely hydrating, organic lotion with skin-soothing aloe vera refreshes and repairs. It’s like a wheatgrass shot for your skin. Each time I have accidentally gotten too much sun, I put this on, and it miraculously takes the sting out of a burn and helps to keep peeling to a minimum.

The next essential item to keep on hand in case of a bad burn is CBD. Burns cause inflammation in the skin. That inflammation can be severe in cases of sun poisoning. Bringing the inflammation down is essential to begin the healing process. I always keep a CBD lotion or salve on hand when heading on vacation. The minute I realize I may have gotten too much sun, I apply the CBD on the red areas and even take it orally to help bring the inflammation down. I’ve been amazed at how quickly I heal when I use the two together. I definitely don’t head out into the sun without having them both with me. I like the Cannabliss Hemp Salve, but I also like to soak in a bath with Lord Jones CBD bath salts. Additionally, I keep the Lord Jones Royal Oil on hand for a quick few drops under the tongue for an extra anti-inflammatory dose.

If you’re planning to venture out into the sun, or better yet, if you’re not planning on it… keep some of these items at the ready. It’s when you’re not planning that you’re most likely to end up in trouble. Being prepared ahead of time will ensure that you’ve got powerful tools in your arsenal should you find yourself suffering from too much sun.

I have been a beauty junkie for what seems like forever, but before I did anything about it, I went to law school. (Yes, my life is a little like the reverse of Legally Blonde.) Then, I worked as a prosecutor in Sonoma County after which I moved to the DC area with my husband in ’97. I served as Majority Counsel to the Senate Banking Committee followed by a year-long stint at a lobbying firm. You get the picture. It was then that I decided to act on my dream of becoming an entrepreneur. Finding my favorite beauty products proved to be impossible without stepping foot in a mall–the horror. So, I decided to bring my favorites to Alexandria. A few trips to New York and a flight to France and Bellacara was born in March 2000.

Located in historic Old Town Alexandria, for more than 17 years Bellacara has been Northern Virginia's preeminent boutique for high end cosmetic, skincare and haircare products. At Bellacara you will find premiere beauty products that have been carefully edited by the store’s owner, Angela Sitilides, who personally tests all the products sold in store.
