style guide: pulling off the poncho

A poncho, by definition, is an outer garment designed to keep the body warm. Used originally by the Native American peoples of the Andes, we’ve since adopted the style for functional and fashionable purposes. The beauty about this beauty is that it can be an additional layer to any outfit or worn as outerwear to shield you from the cold.

Warning: Ponchos are intimidating. They involve a lot of fabric and relatively little shape. But fear not because hen worn the right way, they are not only flattering but will quickly become your go-to to staying stylishly cozy all winter long.

If you’re a first-time-poncho-er, here are three tips to getting it right every time:

1. Choose a mono-chromatic outfit. All black is a great starting point.

2. Proportions, proportions, proportions! Don’t go too big or too small with this garment. They are the Goldilocks of apparel. Choose one that looks juuust right. In other words, wear the poncho; don’t let it wear you.

3. Confidence. Never leave home without it. If you’re convinced you’re pulling it off, everyone else will be too.
