Splurge vs Save

From time to time we do pieces like this, offering our customers a bit of variety in the types of products they already buy. As we gear up for back-to-school, I thought the time had come for another rendition of “Splurge vs Save” at Bellacara!

Makeup Remover

Splurge vs Save

Splurge: A favorite among our staff, the non-oily Rilastil Micellar Solution makeup remover also functions as a waterless cleanser, if you need it to. Also, the bottle is 13 oz., so it’s certainly giving you a lot of bang for your buck. $38

Save: The cloth Makeup Eraser removes all makeup — including waterproof — and can be reused ad infinitum. (OK, maybe not that long, but certainly for a long time.) $20

Moisturizing Face Oil

Splurge: I adore this serum. The Maya Chia Super Couple Ultra Luxe Face Oil is made of chia seed oil and an algae extract called astaxanthin. It makes my skin practically sing for joy when I put it on. Anti-aging, smoothing, moisturizing, chock-a-block full of antioxidants. Easily one of my all-time favorite moisturizing products. $85

Save: Not ready to commit to face oil? The sunflower oil and ginger oil in the lightweight Kiehl’s Daily Reviving Concentrate morning oil serum make this one a great place to start! An excellent step toward more advanced skincare. You may just fall in love with this one, though! $46

Volumizing Shampoo

Splurge vs Save

Splurge: Instant. Volume. Straight. Out. Of. The. Shower.

Smells. Like. Heaven.

Makes. Hair. The. Best. Version. Of. Itself.

Need I say more? Christophe Robin Cleansing Volumizing Paste, $53

Save: Living Proof Full Shampoo is one of our most popular volume shampoos, with good reason! It adds a teeny-tiny layer of Living Proof’s patented “thickening molecule,” PBAE, which basically forms a little bumpy sheath over each hair so each strand stands out away from the others, because it’s propped up with microscopic volumizers. #science. $25

Facial Scrub

Splurge: The delicious-smelling Fresh Sugar Face Polish scrub also functions as a hydrating mask! Brown sugar both buffs skin and seals in moisture (it’s a natural humectant!), wild strawberries brighten, and plum seed and grapeseed oils nourish. A treat if ever there was one. $62

Save: A [relatively] new-ish [technical term] product from Mario, the gel-based Mario Badescu Botanical Exfoliating Scrub uses Ecuadorian Ivory Palm seeds for its bead. But don’t fret about micro-tears in the skin — they’ve ground the seeds down so they’re perfectly spherical, meaning you get baby-soft skin with no accidental skin damage! This scrub is particularly awesome if you like to use a gentle scrub daily or every other day. $26
