Resolutions? More Like Action Items

We will do better than resolutions. These are not pie-in-the-sky, no-chance-they-will-last statements. These are thoughtful intentions, set by smart, successful women. Women who run businesses and homes. Women who volunteer. Who lead, who teach, who support, who DO. We know ourselves, and what we can — and will — do to make ourselves, our homes, our businesses, our communities, our world, better in 2018.

My goal for 2018 is to go empower global connectedness. I am working on an organized physical therapy website that will serve populations around the world that don’t have access to skilled healthcare and prescribed exercise. Look for drmeganbrownpt.com coming soon!

I don’t believe in New Year’s resolutions.  They always seem like all-or-nothing and I feel like a big giant failure if I don’t stick to them. Ugh. Who needs that? Instead, I like to set goals for myself; you can read my post from last January to learn a little bit about goal setting. This year, as with most years, I have personal goals and business goals. For business, my goals are to create new websites for both stores, launch a loyalty program for Penny Post, and give Red Barn a little makeover. Plus about a million other ideas but these are the top three.

For myself, my goal is to become stronger. Recently, I took measures to make myself mentally stronger, now I’m hoping to translate that into making myself physically stronger. As 40 creeps further and further away, it’s become abundantly clear to me that I need to take better care of myself. Because this is a very scary prospect for me — I’ve NEVER been one who likes physical exercise — I’m going to do this slowly and methodically, adding one new thing at a time and putting one step in front of the other. Wish me luck!

At Fitness on the Run, we continue to learn the value of slowing down, breathing, meditating, and living our lives intentionally. We believe progress is made not only IN the gym, but OUTSIDE of it as well. We believe a strong body helps build a strong mind. We believe small changes lead to big results. Therefore, we intend to:

1) Breathe more deeply and more often
2) Practice mindfulness and meditation
3) Do a 5-Minute Flow daily
4) Take an FOR Small Group of four to learn how to get strong(er) every day
5) Form a new healthy habit once a month
6) Exercise for at least 30 minutes every day

I plan on going to bed earlier. I find that if I get a good night’s sleep, I make my 6am workout happen and I make better food choices. Cutting out alcohol will also help! It totally disrupts my sleep!

For whatever reason, I don’t make resolutions but I do have a goal…to submit out-of-network health insurance claims in a timely manner…YAWN!  Although maybe I should re-phrase it: to not procrastinate on mundane yet necessary chores!

I have stated before on Stylebook that I am really bad at putting on makeup. It isn’t that I don’t think I need it, I just don’t know how to put it on. So this year my resolution is to use all the products I purchase. This isn’t just makeup. There aren’t many lotions or potions for hair, face, or skin that I pass up.

I am hopeful this will help with my ongoing resolution to stop picking my cuticles as well. I have bottles and bottles of hand cream, cuticle softener, and cuticle eraser so it is time to put them to use.

This year, I am not focusing on exercise to lose weight but to give myself mental clarity and to focus on feeling strong. I am committing to a very manageable one day a week at Mind the Mat and one day a week at Ascend Underground. I haven’t stayed consistent on one particular workout because I am always trying to push for two or three days a week of the same thing and I get burnt out! With the variety of classes at Mind the Mat, I know I’ll be able to switch it up enough to keep myself engaged, and the ever-changing routines of Ascend Underground keep pushing me to my limit!

When I set out to establish my 2018 goals, I evaluate the big-ticket accomplishments I intend to reach by the end of the year – grow my business 10X, raise more funds for the organizations for which I volunteer, learn to love yoga, etc. I usually get very specific about these intended accomplishments and write them and re-write them throughout the year in a paper notebook that I carry around with me as a reminder.

In addition to the process of establishing future accomplishments, another important element for me is re-evaluating my personal philosophy, that is, what I believe I demonstrate to others. Once I evaluate these elements, I come up with one positive quality to work on throughout the year – something that tells others more about who I am/what I want to be known for. Having just started my business one month ago, I want to be known for exceptional customer service and I will work toward developing ways in which to reach that goal throughout the year and beyond.

As you begin the new year, what new qualities do you want to add to your personal philosophy or brand – kindness, philanthropy, community, exceptional customer service? Some examples of what others might currently say are:

“She’s a hard-worker”

“He’s very generous”

“She’s very creative”

“He’d give you the shirt from his back”

“She’s one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet”

Pick at least one quality you want to work on that will add to your personal goals. Not only will this help you in your personal or professional life, it will improve the world around you.

Cheers to 2018!
