Product Line Spotlight: Surratt

By: Jennifer Smithmeyer

It’s true that I spend five days a week surrounded by the best beauty products a girl could ask for. Lately when it comes to makeup, I’ve been a bit set in my routine. I have a collection of my favorite items, and I cycle through them. This was until Danielle from fibre space came to visit the other day. She couldn’t say enough good things about the Smoky Eye Baton from Surratt that I had sold her the week before. I knew it was a great eyeliner when I sold it to her, but after our conversation I was inspired to try it again for myself.

What makes this eyeliner baton unique is that one side contains a creamy, smudgeable eyeliner and the other is a corresponding smoldering eyeshadow. After applying the eyeliner above my lashes, I used the eyeshadow smudger to blend the line out to reveal an effortless smokey eye. Casual enough to wear in the daytime, but with a slight sultry touch. The results had me wondering where this product had been my whole life. The answer? Right under my nose.

This got the wheels turning. What else am I missing here? Since we first started carrying the Surratt makeup line, I’ve been a big fan of the Lipslique lipsticks. They wear comfortably like a balm, have the shine of a gloss, and last long like a stain. Perhaps it is my undying love of Lipslique that lead me to overlook La Bâton Rouge. With only six shades, they’re easy to miss. But once you discover them, you’ll sure be glad you did.

Much like the Smoky Eye Baton, the La Bâton Rouge lipsticks are double-ended. On one side there is a slim, creamy lipstick, and on the other, a Japanese mattifying pigment powder. The slim structure of the lipstick makes for perfect application without the need for a lipliner. After putting on the mattifying pigment powder, you’re ready for all-day wear. Ready for the bonus? It stays on your lips and not all over your mask!

Now, this next product is a fairly new one. It’s the Dew Drop Foundation. And boy, does it live up to its name. With light to medium coverage, this foundation provides a hydrated, glow-from-within finish. It’s versatile enough to use for a “no-makeup” makeup look, all the way to a full face glam. For areas where you need a little extra coverage and for under the eyes, pair it with the Surreal Skin Concealer. The two formulas blend together seamlessly for radiant skin.

Up next, we have the Expressioniste Brow Pencil – because I simply cannot write an article about Surratt without mentioning my all-time favorite eyebrow pencil! I begin by combing my brows with the attached spoolie brush before applying the product. The slim design of the pencil makes for precise application, all the way from outlining the brows to adding texture. The formula is creamy enough that the pigment glides on effortlessly upon contact, without having to apply much pressure (have you ever put on an eyebrow pencil that required more pressure than necessary to build the color, and as a result, took a few of your brow hairs with it? I’ll pass!). As an added bonus, the pencil holder is refillable. So, when your pencil has run its course, just pop the cartridge out and pick up a new one! Glam and good for the environment, I dig it.

  • The latest from Angela
I have been a beauty junkie for what seems like forever, but before I did anything about it, I went to law school. (Yes, my life is a little like the reverse of Legally Blonde.) Then, I worked as a prosecutor in Sonoma County after which I moved to the DC area with my husband in ’97. I served as Majority Counsel to the Senate Banking Committee followed by a year-long stint at a lobbying firm. You get the picture. It was then that I decided to act on my dream of becoming an entrepreneur. Finding my favorite beauty products proved to be impossible without stepping foot in a mall–the horror. So, I decided to bring my favorites to Alexandria. A few trips to New York and a flight to France and Bellacara was born in March 2000.

Located in historic Old Town Alexandria, for more than 17 years Bellacara has been Northern Virginia's preeminent boutique for high end cosmetic, skincare and haircare products. At Bellacara you will find premiere beauty products that have been carefully edited by the store’s owner, Angela Sitilides, who personally tests all the products sold in store. The boutique carries only the best product lines – Kiehl’s, Jouer, Dr. Dennis Gross, Christophe Robin, Moroccan Oil, Bumble & Bumble, Fresh, Molton Brown, Skinceuticals, Smashbox, Stila, Mario Badescu, Clarins, Dermalogica, Kevyn Aucoin, Kai, Child, St. Tropez, Smith and Cult, and many more.
