“Running fed my soul…”

Running Recovery

When I am not involved with my salon and all things hair and beauty, I love to spend my free time outdoors. This obsession began when my daughter and son joined the track team at Joiner High school. My kids would come home everyday filled with energy and passion for the sport. In an effort to spend more time with them, I picked up running myself. My days would start early with the rising of the sun and the cool morning breeze.

Running Recovery

Running quickly became a way for my children and I to spend quality time together and also a release for me. I ran several miles a day, four days a week, no matter the rain, snow, and even icy days. Running fed my soul. After years of this regimen, running started to take a toll on my knees. I figured mountain biking would be a great alternative. I joined a few close friends at the Potomac Horse Center and rode several days a week. I got my nature fix, but also at the same time maintained my healthy lifestyle. Unfortunately, within a few years my knees started to give me problems once more, therefore I resorted to cycling classes at the gym.

The pain in my knee did not go away, so I reached out to my physician. In the beginning of 2017, I started physical therapy but it did not work for me and I was told that I needed a knee replacement. The decision to go through with this surgery was difficult because it was a very long recovery and there was even a possible chance of the procedure going wrong.

So there I was in Sibley Hospital, dreaming about my knees that I remembered. Thankfully, my surgery was successful and within two weeks I started my journey to my recovery. I had a bad reaction to some topical medical products that were given to me, which lengthened my recovery time. It has been long and trying journey, but with the support of my family, friends, clients, and my amazing staff, they have all helped me persevere.

I am currently working three days a week with a few clients a day, so I can be present. I also wanted to acknowledge two great people at Jackson Clinic, my physical therapist Dr. Mason Wallace and Elmira Ksiazek, his supportive assistant. Thank you so much for the care and motivating words that helped me push through. I am determined to do my very best and enjoy whatever comes my way.
