“Save the t-shirts and sweats for after dessert…”

Growing up, I was a really, really picky eater. I lived off four simple food groups – bread, cheese, plain pasta, and pizza – and even those meals had to be prepared specifically to my liking. I was a real joy to be around at restaurants and friends’ houses.

I know so many people treasure Thanksgiving, but it was my most dreaded meal of the year. Turkey? Stuffing? Cranberry? Not for me, no thank you! I wouldn’t eat the mashed potatoes with gravy or the green bean casseroles – I wouldn’t even try the pie! When visiting family and friends for the holiday, I made sure my family conspicuously packed a bag of rolls… because that’s all I was eating. This always led to the embarrassment of everyone asking me, “Why are you only eating rolls for dinner?!?!” Rolls were all I ate for Thanksgiving and it was my least favorite holiday for a long time.

I am grateful (as are others) that my palate eventually evolved, and I now very much look forward to and appreciate the holiday for what it is: a gathering of loved ones to express gratitude for all the wonderful things we have in our lives. I appreciate – now more than ever – the opportunity to come together, reflect, and celebrate. With the pandemic, we are sad that it won’t be our usual large gathering of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends, but Thanksgiving (and the holidays in general) can still be special during these difficult times. Like everything in our lives, we’re just learning to adapt and do things differently. There are so many silver linings that come with the changes. Hopefully, even some great new traditions that can be incorporated in the years to come.

Of course, we will #getdressed for the occasion! And you and your families should too. Save the t-shirts and sweats for after dessert and make the most of your Thanksgiving gathering. Even in this weird, weird time, there is so very much to be thankful for. See below for the looks we are loving.

We hope we will see you on Friday, November 27 (the day after Thanksgiving) for Plaid Friday, where the entire store will be 30 percent off starting at 6am. Early risers will receive special gifts with purchases (*while supplies last!)

And if you need any recommendations on where to get the best rolls for your Thanksgiving feast, just let me know. 😉

Born and raised in Alexandria and married to a native Alexandrian as well! We love living in Old Town – just a few blocks from the store – with our three little boys and golden retriever Rumpelstiltzkin. Although my first job and real love was retail (the Lilly Pad where Mint Condition is now), I worked in Public Affairs and PR prior to buying the shop, which has really been a dream come true for me. I feel so grateful to work with our customers to find the perfect outfit for their special childhood moments. When I’m not at the store you can probably find me at an Old Town park chasing the boys or on my yoga mat.

A classic children’s boutique in Old Town, Alexandria for 40 years, we carry special occasion and play clothes for sizes newborn to 12. Located in the historic Crilley Warehouse just two blocks from the water, Monday’s Child is your go-to shop for baby gifts, baptism gowns, holiday dresses and outfits, boy’s blazers and ties, First Communion, shoes, books, toys and much more.
