how do I wear booties with jeans? 3 ways to make it work

If I had to pick one wardrobe combination to wear every day for the rest of my life, it would be jeans and booties. It’s the ultimate pull-on-and-go cool-girl outfit, whether you’re heading out to run errands, keeping it casual for dinner, or (in my line of work) heading out with client for a day of shopping. You can wear booties with almost any style of jean or pant — skinny, boyfriend, cropped, peg, etc. My love for this wardrobe staple is unwavering. At the same time, it’s no surprise that one of our most common style questions is “I love my ankle boots, but how do I wear them with jeans?” Here are three easy ways to rock your ankle boots this season.

DIY Hem

This trick is for skinny jeans that may be hemmed longer to go with your flats, but then get all bunchy and sloppy looking when you put on ankle boots.  Fold the hem of your skinny jeans inward. The fold under usually stays put, but if you feel like you want a little extra assurance, affix with double-sided tape. You simply create a temporary hem!

The Roll-It-Up Cuff
If you tend to reach for your skinny jeans every time you’re in the mood to wear ankle boots, it’s time to change things up. To cuff your jeans, simply fold the jeans to create a 1 inch cuff. Fold again to create a doubled one-inch cuff. Smooth out the cuff. The hem roll works best with boyfriend jeans and straight leg jeans. Make sure there is a break (you see a little sliver of ankle) between the cuff and the booties for a purposeful, stylish look. When your cuff sits right against the top of your ankle boot, it can look like your jeans are too big and need to be hemmed.

*Tip: it’s easier to cuff your jeans before putting them on and then just do a little adjusting afterwards as needed.

The Wide Cuff
A thick cuff works best on straight-leg denim. Like the roll-it-up-cuff, you’re going to want it to hit right above the ankle, but not too far up since this cuff has a tendency to shorten the leg line. Grab a pair of loose fitting, wider-leg boyfriend jeans or straight leg jeans (flares are too wide and not a good idea to ever cuff) and fold the jeans to create a two-inch cuff. Depending on how long the jeans are, you may need to fold again to create a doubled two-inch cuff. Smooth it out to create a symmetrical look. This pairing works best when you’re working with high-heeled booties because the added height offsets the bagginess of the jeans and adds some femininity to the tomboyish look.

Finally, the ONLY time you can tuck into your booties is if you are wearing leggings, jeggings, or ultra-skinny jeans where the ankle falls straight into the boot.
