finding your perfect handbag

With our upcoming workshop on the topic, we’re obsessing over accessories around here this month! My clients are always on the hunt for the perfect everyday handbag, something neutral and large enough to tote around a laptop and everything needed for a day on-the-go. Finding the perfect handbag can be tricky because it needs to be both fashionable and functional. Here are some of my tips for finding a great handbag:

Have some guidelines to look for but keep an open mind. I’ve seen many women design the perfect handbag in their mind (exact shape, size, color, number of pockets, zippers, etc.) and search in vain forever trying to find something that doesn’t exist. Have some general guidelines, such as it needs to fit my laptop and be in a versatile neutral color, and then be open minded about the exact color, size and other details.

Go neutral but think outside the box. Neutral colored handbags are great for their versatility but don’t get stuck in the mindset that a neutral has to be black or brown. Some of the new neutrals include gray, navy, taupe, olive green, and burgundy. These colors are just as (and sometimes more!) versatile and feel a bit more modern.

Buy the best quality you can afford. Handbags are going to be your biggest splurge accessory. This is one area where spending the extra money can make a huge difference in your overall look.

Build a handbag wardrobe. You’re not going to find one single handbag that is both practical and appropriate for every situation in your life. Build a wardrobe of options in various sizes and styles so you’re ready for anything. Perhaps 4-6 options, including: (1) an everyday handbag large enough to hold everything you need for a weekday; (2) an oversize clutch for informal evenings out; (3) a small clutch for dressy nights out; (4) a weekend tote – this could be the same as your everyday bag depending on your lifestyle; and (5) a cross-body bag for errands or activities you want to be hands free..
