fall style rule: choose texture

Over the next few days, the Stylebook contributors will arm you with all of the fall fashion and beauty trend information you need to look your best this coming season. We’ve already reviewed the top shoe trends, and it is quickly becoming clear that all rich shades of wine (plum, merlot, marsala, etc.) are going to take center stage. But if you aren’t interested in overhauling your closet or you don’t feel that the latest trends suit you, there is one fall style rule that remains true from year to year and will never steer you wrong: above all else, choose texture. By opting for luxurious fabrics in textures that feel great against the skin–fabrics such as leather, suede, tweed, cashmere, and fur–you instantly upgrade your wardrobe with pieces that are ideal for this time of transition.

Consider for a moment this suede panel shift dress available at Coco Blanca and styled by Sarah Phillips of blog Fifty-Two Thursdays. The suede paneling makes the dress special while the ponte knit back makes it comfortable and easy to wear on days when the weather fluctuates greatly. The suede is seasonally appropriate while the cut is still apt for the lingering few days of summer. Its versatility is also key–wear it alone as seen here; or layer a cozy cashmere wrap over it on cooler days; or tights, boots and a leather jacket come winter.

By shopping for texture and fall-worthy fabrics and setting aside the trends of the moment, you will seamlessly transition your own style into the next season with pieces that will stand the test of time.

Sarah chose to create a chic evening look with our suede panel shift dress by accessorizing it with a snakeskin chain purse, a gold and white stone necklace from Coco Blanca and a pair of black, strappy heels. How would you wear it?
