exfoliators revealed: the secret to a bright complexion

One of my favorite things to do in Old Town is walk through the neighborhoods off King Street and appreciate all of the beautiful vibrant flowers and greenery. The prolonged winter season seems, finally, to have released us from its chilly grasp. As anyone who travels a lot knows, changes in temperature and air – like when the seasons change – can wreak havoc on our skin. As the temperatures rise and we are taking more lovely strolls around town, it’s essential to reevaluate our skincare regimens to accommodate the more active seasons. The question is, how do we get that summer glow while combating things like sweat and clogged pores?

Ladies, let me introduce you to one of the most underrated steps in our skincare regimens: exfoliators. A good exfoliator can do wonders for our faces and can help us achieve and maintain a bright complexion by gently buffing away dead skin cells, refine pores, and remove dirt and residue to reveal a smooth, dewy result.

However, how to find the right one for you? First, please, I am begging you: step away from the apricot stuff you can get from drugstores. You know the one. Cheaper exfoliators can do more damage than good: the particles are usually too large and jagged, which scrape and scratch your skin rather than gently brushing away debris.

The product that I always find myself coming back to is Dermalogica’s Skin Prep Scrub. It’s made from finely granulated corn cob meal, combined with soothing botanicals of mallow, ivy and cucumber and it is delightful, especially for those with sensitive skin such as yours truly. I can instantaneously feel a dramatic difference in the texture of my face.

Another tried and tested favorite is Skinceutical’s Micro Exfoliating Scrub. Gentle and gel- based, it is formulated with diatomaceous earth microbeads (a naturally occurring rock rich in minerals) in addition to aloe vera for its anti-inflammatory and moisturizing benefits. The super-fine formula deeply cleanses and buffs away impurities to reveal a glowing and incredibly soft complexion.

And voila – whether taking brisk morning strolls around town, chasing rambunctious children in the yard, or basking in the warmth by the marina with a good book – a few uses of a good exfoliator a couple times a week will undo all of the dirt and oils that dull your skin in the warm seasons. Your face will look as fresh, bright and cheery as all of the springtime flowers dotting the yards in Old Town.
