Damaged Hair (and How To Avoid It)

Hair damage is the worst, especially for those of us trying to grow or maintain long hair. We’ve put together a short list of tips and tricks you can use to prevent hair damage.

The first step is to take a look at your current hair condition. Any major split or damaged ends need to be cut off. It’s hard for hair to retain length when the ends are constantly breaking off due to splitting. Once you’ve done this, try to maintain the health of your hair by avoiding over-washing and overusing heat. Always apply a heat protectant product when using irons or dryers.

Avoid shampoos that are too drying. One of the top moisturizing shampoos on the market is Dry Remedy from Aveda, and we recommend it all the time.

We also advise limiting the use of elastic ties or bands in your hair on a regular basis. This is even more true if you’re always putting your hair up in the exact same spot, as this causes stress and can lead to breakage over time. We know this is often unavoidable, especially when it’s hot and humid or while working out. Just keep it to a minimum, don’t tie them too tight, and try to use softer ties.

Our last tip is not to over-brush, especially wet hair as your locks are much more fragile when wet.

Also keep in mind that once damage is done you cannot reverse it — it will need to be cut. We recommend using deep conditioning masks like Absolue Keratine or Karite by Rene Furterer or similar products as preventative measures. While these products are great, they won’t necessarily heal severe damage, so some planning up front will surely save you some frustration down the road.

As always, the Bazzak team is more than happy to work with you to make sure your hair is as fabulous as you are!
