How To Create Cute Holiday Looks for Kids but Not Break the Bank

We spend so much money this time of year, from gifts, to holiday meals and everything else that the season brings, that when it comes time to dress our children it is just another expense. But, of course we want them to have that perfect outfit for sitting on Santa’s lap, attending a holiday party, and that oh-so-perfect dress or suit for Christmas Day. 529 Kids Consign on Royal Street is here to help you make all of this happen in style and on a budget! Here are a few helpful tips to have your kiddos looking fabulous this season without breaking the bank.

1. Start with what you have already

Peruse their closets to find a plaid shirt or something to which you can add an inexpensive accessory to create the perfect holiday look. I love this look for a little boy; all you need to do is add a cute holiday bow tie to a plaid shirt, or white shirt even, that is already in his closet. We sell this adorable one at 529 for $13.50! Throw a sweater over it for the perfect layered holiday look for Santa’s lap! The same can be done for a little gal. This crewcuts plaid shirt is perfect, it just needs a pop of red or an elf headband and voila, the perfect holiday look for Santa! Both bow and headband can be found at 529 for $6 and $8.

2. Be practical

So you don’t have that perfect plaid shirt or pop of red already in the closet? Purchase something that your kiddo can wear after the holidays, too. So often we buy just for the occasion..now I must say I don’t mind that as it brings 529 a ton of beautiful worn-once items! But, to help you out…I say, think bigger picture!

I love this look for a little guy. A blazer is a staple and can be worn for any special occasion through out the year, but instead of the dreaded “dress pant” buy a pair of red cords, instead! They are super fashionable with a plaid shirt and blazer for the holiday season, but also work so well after with a cozy sweater or long-sleeve tee.

For the girls, I love this ruffle neck woven from Vineyard Vines. It works so well with this beautiful brocade skirt from crewcuts and also works perfectly for school with a denim skirt. Two looks, one shirt, easy peasy and budget friendly.

Because there are so many options for girls, I had to show you another one I love. This crewcuts plaid tank looks so fabulous with a red skirt for the holidays but equally as chic with jeans after. Throw a cardigan over all of it and it’s perfect for both holiday and beyond.

3. Shop consignment first

So you’ve gone through the closets, found a piece or two that might work, but still need a blazer, statement top, or dress? Try shopping consignment first. Consignment stores often have that “worn-once” blazer or holiday dress that I spoke of earlier. If you are lucky, they have your size. The trick is to stop in often. Find out when they receive the bulk of their inventory for the week and get in there! Stalk the place, if you will! At 529 it is not rare to find a blazer from Brooks Brothers or even a full suit from Janie and Jack for 50 percent off of retail. You can almost always find the perfect plaid piece, too. Can you say Oscar de la Renta shift for $44.99?!

Happy Shopping & Happy Holidays!

  • The latest from Megan
Megan’s career in retail/merchandising began in the mid nineties standing in front of a woodsy smelling Abercrombie and Fitch. Sporting an oversized plaid flannel and bootcut jeans she said hello to every customer that eagerly walked in to the popular retailer. Little did Megan know that, while creating a perfect “denim wall”and dressing in all of the latest fashion that the lifestyle brand offered she was building the foundation for her fun and exciting career! After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh, Megan managed multiple A&F stores before she moved on to an assistant buyer position in contemporary dresses at the local Arlington based retailer Hecht’s (now Macy’s). She gained an immeasurable amount of knowledge before moving onto a different facet of the business at Calvin Klein Jeans. Megan worked her way from retail coordinator to East-Coast regional manager helping to create the Calvin Klein aesthetic in department stores from Boston to Miami. After her first son Ethan was born, her position at CKJ was eliminated, due to the harsh economic conditions at the time. This is how 529 was born! Megan quickly began to see how fast Ethan was growing out of his clothing. She knew other moms had the same amount of adorable “gently-worn” clothing piling up. Combining her love of retail and her obsession with dressing Ethan gave her the idea to try and sell this clothing. 529 became a popular “pop-up” shop in the Alexandria area and once the following was big enough, a brick and mortar store in historic Old Town. 529 Kids Consign exemplifies who Megan is and what she has learned throughout her career. It’s a warm, well-organized, well- edited boutique that attracts moms from all over the DC metro area. On any given visit to the store you may be greeted by three boys dressed to the nines..they too have the passion.

We are an upscale children's and maternity consignment boutique specializing in the latest trends. Quality is important to us, which is why we are particular about our brands. Offering not only consignment items but also the freshest and most trendy must haves for hip moms and cool kids makes us the place to shop!
