I was inspired by Molly’s awesome post about doing your own thing with summer fabrics. You know what? The same (mostly) holds true for makeup. You have cool undertones, were formerly labeled a “Winter,” have always been put in orchid-y pinks and soft roses? Go ahead and try that hot coral. You’ve got a gorgeous bronzy skin tone, but you want to go for a cool burgundy lip, and in the middle of July, to boot? Why not! If it looks bad, wash it off. If it looks amazing…aren’t you glad you broke the rules?
It is true, of course, that different colors look better on some skin tones or eye colors than on others. But what if you’re the exception? I’m one of those people who relies on this fact: if it looks weird, unexplainable, and terrible on the hanger…it’s going to look great on me. This is not to say I buy all of my clothes going by that principle, but I’ve learned to not throw out an outfit or a makeup color just because at first blush it may not seem like the best idea.
In the same way we’re not to judge books–or people, for that matter–by the cover, let’s not judge the tube of fuchsia lip stain or the pot of creamsicle-toned blush because we’ve never tried them before. It may turn out to be true love. Or at the very least, super fun.
