Book Report: Interior Design

School officially starts in one week – and while it feels like a shell of a school year – I’m still getting the seasonal itch to start fresh. One of my favorite places for inspiration is the coffee table book on interior design. So, here are a few of my personal recommendations because you should always judge a book by its cover.

Living with Pattern by Rebecca Atwood

OK, I admit I bought this book merely for the black and white cover and bright orange page edges – but I loved reading it for real-life tips on introducing and mixing patterns. Everyone says the same thing – Atwood actually shows you how to implement it.

Get It Together by Orlando Soria

An irreverent, funny look at interior design including my favorite, laugh out loud chapter, “If your kids are brats it’s probably your fault for not making their rooms cute enough.” Truth.

The Colourist Issue #4 by Annie Sloan

Annie Sloan releases these quarterly bookazines packed with paint projects, travel tips, and home tours to get your creative juices flowing. We only have one remaining at Boxwood but can always order more.

The Curated Home by Grant K. Gibson

The eye candy here is abundant – I love looking at the mix of styles, colors, and highs and lows. I purchased my copy from the fancy ladies at Patina and it has approximately 217 post-it notes on every other page.

Beige is Not a Color by Carlos Mota

If Boxwood had a motto – this would be it. As a matter of fact, when I couldn’t find it from a wholesaler – I bought it just to keep it in the shop. This masterpiece by the former International Style Editor for Architectural Digest and Editor at Large for Elle Decor Magazine is full of breathtaking photos from around the world. It’s a piece of art in book form.

The awesome team at Old Town Books can order many of these for you. Happy reading!

Co-Owner | Boxwood
Over the past 15 years, I’ve covered the major branches of D.C. careers – political campaigns, Senate press office, advertising sales, and strategic communications. But after I had my two kids, I knew I wanted to do something that truly reflected my desire for creative, colorful design. Luckily, I stumbled into a shop on South Royal Street in early 2019 and met Joanna Szczerban. We opened Boxwood in April to offer Old Town a fresh take on home decor and gifts – and we haven’t looked back.

Boxwood was born out of the idea that our homes should be as vibrant and colorful as the people who live in them. So our decorative items and gifts bring a fresh, modern look to Old Town – everything from pillows and table linens to furniture painted with Annie Sloan® Chalk Paint®.
