ask stylebook: turtlenecks?

Jackie: I’ve started to notice turtlenecks in magazines again. How do I wear them without looking too frumpy?

Cathy, Style Speaks: Turtlenecks don’t have the chicest of connotations, do they? But, they can actually look quite terrific when done right. (Think, Audrey Hepburn.) And, you may already have some sitting in your closet.

A classic turtleneck with a folded-over collar, or stand up mock collar, and slim fit is universally flattering and extremely versatile. The slim fit is the key to avoiding looking frumpy. Skip oversized chunky knits in favor of lightweight cashmere, cotton or jersey. Layer it underneath a sleeveless dress or leather blazer or wear it alone with a pair of wide leg trousers, jeans or a pencil skirt. You can’t go wrong with black, or try a striped version for a twist. You could even try a sleeveless turtleneck for spring. Wear your hair pulled back away from your face and neck so it doesn’t compete and add volume to the neckline. Et voila! You’re on trend and classic at the same time.
