How long have you been styling hair?
I actually didn’t start out as a hair stylist. My first career was designing clothing and after that I was a school teacher. I have always loved to design, so I went from fashion design to designing hair and have been doing that since 1979. I love to look at a client, the texture of her hair, the shape of her face, and learn a bit about who she is, what she does, then design a cut that is both flattering and perfect for her lifestyle.

What hair care secret do you wish everyone knew?
Do not wait too long to refresh your color! Also, if you're spending money on hair coloring then I highly recommend using only "color-care" products that protect and prolong your investment!

Speaking of products, what are your go-to’s? What do you recommend most?
There are so many hair products on the market and it really can be confusing for clients, so it is important to us that we stay up to date on what’s new, what’s proven, and what’s best.

One product line we have carried at Bazzak since day one is René Furterer by Pierre Fabre, a French company. Based on 100 percent natural essential oils and plant extracts that have been carefully selected for their specific virtues, René Furterer really isn’t your everyday hair product: it is a pharmaceutical. Their products work quickly, safely, and effectively to take care of any hair and scalp problem with visible and lasting results. I’m currently recommending the Okara oil treatment – it’s perfect to combat the drier winter air.

Aveda is another brand we feature at our salon and highly recommend.

When did you open Bazzak?
Bazzak opened in 1980 at 822 King Street. In 2011, we had the opportunity to buy the building where we're currently located at 1110 King Street. Our team and our clients love this space.

What’s the best part of owning your own business?
Of course I love what I do and the clients I with whom I work – many have been coming for many, many years – but I have to say the best part of owning a business is creating jobs and training our staff.

On that note, can you tell us about your team?
We have four other stylists in addition to me. Our colorist Maria Escobar, who has eighteen years of experience; stylists Aida Colette and Nina Cockrell; and Van, our nail tech. Our receptionists and front desk manager Gee, Maya, and Marina round out the team.

What do you like about Old Town?
I like that Old Town is a small enough town that everyone knows each other, yet large enough that you have your privacy. The people here are very nice and our clients are loyal. We also have such great independent boutiques. I love going to The Shoe Hive and The Hive, Bellacara, and J. Brown.

Beyond business, what do you love to do? What are your hobbies?
I love to read good books. Health and wellness are very important to me. I go to the gym, cycle three or four times a week, and love hiking. Plus I travel and paint whenever I get the chance.
