your biggest impact accessories

I was working with a client the other day who had a goal of learning to use accessories in an impactful way to create a more put-together look. The two accessories I wanted her to focus on mastering first were necklaces and scarves. Necklaces and scarves are a great way to make a big impact, to really switch up your look, because they’re front and center more so than other accessories. Earrings, rings, belts and bracelets are great for finishing a look but what you put around your neck is going to make the biggest visible impact. I also find that these are the trickiest accessories to master. Fortunately, there are a few guidelines you can follow to use scarves and necklaces to create a more put-together look.

How do you choose the right necklace for your outfit? It can be tricky. The shape of your neckline, and where that neckline hits you, are the details that dictate the kind of necklace that will look best. In general, you want the shape of your necklace to mimic the shape of your neckline. For example, if you’re wearing a v-neck, wear a necklace that also makes a ‘v’ shape, such as a pendant; for a scoop neck go for a round shape necklace; a crew neck is a great opportunity for a statement necklace that will fill in the blank space around your neckline.

In addition to the shape of your necklace, you also want to think about the right length. A necklace that is too short can really cut off your proportions making you look shorter and wider. With a v-neck or scoop neck, you want the necklace either sitting in the neckline, no more than an inch above, or at least an inch or two below. Avoid a necklace that sits right at your neckline where it’s going to get caught up in your top or too high where it will cut you off.

Scarves are a great way to add color, print and texture to your look. Go for a colorful printed scarf to jazz up basics, a silk scarf to add personality to your work look or one in a flattering shade to bring life and color to your face. This time of year, choose light weight scarves in fabrics like linen, silk, light-weight cashmere or cotton.

Ninety percent of outfits will benefit from adding a scarf or necklace. If you only have time to add one more thing to your look before you head out the door, put something around your neck!
