9 Stylist-Approved Trends To Try for Spring ‘17

As a personal stylist, I have to stay up on trends well before stores sell them so that I know what to expect when shopping for clients. Last Fall, designers gave us a taste of what’s to come this springtime, and now that stores have started stocking warmer weather threads, we can see that the Spring trends do not disappoint…and neither did the Stylebook boutiques!

I asked Nicole and Chelsea Santa of The District Darlings – my favorite D.C. lifestyle and fashion blogging sisters — to let me style them for this shoot. These two amazing, philanthropic, beautiful women were happy to help and they looked absolutely amazing in the trends I chose!

Khaki

Yes, you read that correctly. The beige shade that is almost always synonymous with “boring” has been revitalized. From what I saw on the runways, it comes in a great number of ways — switching from the sometimes-utilitarian feel to nipped waists and femme ruffles, to variations of the classic trench, and, my personal favorite, an all-over monochromatic ensemble.

To make monochromatic khaki work, it is imperative that you mix shades and fabrics, otherwise it will fall flat (and look cheap…eek!). You don’t want it to look like a delivery person’s uniform, so mixing shades and materials will add depth and dimension and make your outfit look purposeful and polished.

Shine

Be it gleaming lamé, iridescent paillettes, or twinkly sequins, light-catching materials were all over the runways for Spring, my favorite being iridescent. While it is another trend that has resurfaced from the 90’s, it gets an update for Spring, done in sequins and sheers.

Fantasy Statement Earrings

The size of favored runway earrings has steadily been growing over the past few seasons, but for 2017, think sculptural styles and solo danglers rather than the glitzy chandeliers of seasons past. And they aren’t just popular for evening anymore. Wear them for daytime too!

Statement Sleeves

Despite the broad range of prints, textures, and silhouettes that dominated the Spring/Summer 2017 Fashion Week runways, designers across New York, London, Milan, and Paris could all agree on one major trend: the statement sleeve. Poet’s sleeves, bishop sleeves, sleeves trimmed with fluttering fabric accents, sleeves with cut-outs, and sleeves that were embellished, flared, or overly long, every variety imaginable coursed down the runway, with plenty of references to the Romantic periods reworked for the modern era.

Yellow

From mustard to chartreuse to bright, zingy lemon, yellow is having a major moment in fashion for Spring. However, yellow is a tough color to wear head to toe. A great way is to start small, so try adding this trend into your wardrobe with shoes or a clutch.

Massive Statement Necklaces

Statement earrings aren’t the only accessory that have gotten bigger and bigger over the years. Why not a really massive necklace? A good tip: wear them with thin blouses, shirts, and light dresses, not chunky knits or collared blouses.

Banker Stripes

Inspired by Wall Street, but tweaked and tinkered to work for Spring, banker stripes are storming this season. From horizontal to vertical, thick to ultra-thin lines, stripes are clearly going far beyond the classic navy and white nauticals. We’re seeing them not only on crisp button downs, but on day dresses, maxi skirts, and even accessories!

Ultra-Oversized Bags

So by now you’re sensing a theme for 2017…the bigger the accessory, the better! So say goodbye to “carrying less” because ultra-oversized bags are the “it” bag to carry this Spring. While massive purses might not be as practical as your go-to everyday tote, they are a fun and somewhat functional option for those who travel often and want a fashionable carry-on!

New Takes on Shirting

On Chelsea: Dress, The Hive; Shoes and Necklace, The Shoe Hive.

Whether its banker stripes, the “is my shirt falling off” shoulder effect, or mismatched prints, it’s always nice to get updated twists on an ol’ classic. My favorite update on shirting is the updated shirtdress. From one-shoulder to frays, raw hems, and a baggier, more relaxed fit, you’ll be sure to find an updated classic that’s right for you!
