The 3 Denim Trends You Need To Own This Fall

Denim itself is undeniably popular all year long, but fall is by far and away denim’s biggest season. When the air gets cooler, you’re allowed more opportunity to wear your favorite pair(s) of jeans. As a personal stylist, it is my job to watch the stores fill with latest trends, especially denim trends, because our clients are always looking for a pair. I’ve see a LOT of jeans — so many pairs in fact that you might think I’d be sick of them by now; I’m definitely not. The huge selection of silhouettes this season may include the best styles I’ve seen in a while and I’m amazed by the denim gods’ offerings.

We tell our clients to always have a dark wash skinny jean in their wardrobe, but sometimes they’re looking to update their denim arsenal and liven up the party. And while Fall 2016 is bringing back some old favorites, like flares, this season isn’t about understated, easy denim. Designers seemed to have a bit more fun with this classic staple, showcasing bottoms in a spectacular array of cuts, washes, lengths, and even throwing on unexpected designs that might seem intimidating at first, but is actually very wearable. It’s time to get with the maximalist times and rejuvenate our denim closets.

I asked my dear friend and fashion enthusiast, Sophia, to model three of my favorite Fall 2016 denim trends.

Distressed Boyfriend Jeans

No, boyfriend jeans aren’t a new trend, but this season they speak to me. They always were supposed to look haphazard, like you grabbed your man’s jeans because you couldn’t find your own; as if they fit someone else better than you. Yet more times than not, it was never quite right. Boyfriend jeans of old donned a much lower rise and the crotch drop was too low, not yielding a feminine leisurely vibe, and instead making you look sloppy.

This season however, they updated them to fit a woman’s curves better by making the fit relaxed instead of baggy, and like a lot of Fall 2016 denim, added a vintage-inspired higher rise. Think ripped jeans have to look sloppy and grungy? Think again! When the rest of your look is feminine with tailored pieces and ladylike heels, you keep the look sophisticated.

Embroidered Denim

Another vintage-inspired denim trend that couldn’t be cooler? Embroidered blues. Flared, fitted, or slouchy, intricately stitched denim is everywhere this season thanks to Alexander McQueen and Gucci’s Fall 2016-17 collections. Pretty feminine flora and fauna add life to lighter wash denim, making it easy to make a statement without even trying. Wearing embroidered denim for your casual street style makes your outfit effortlessly cool, laid-back chic, and trendy.

Step Hem Denim

This jean style has especially caught my eye this season and not because I’ve seen it everywhere. Step hem jeans — jeans with raw hems that are shorter in the front and longer in the back — are a continuation of the Vetements inspired movement that I’ve seen sweep fashion runways in the past few seasons, yet has a re-finished retro feel. The fit is also slightly cropped to accentuate the detail. They’ll draw attention to your ankles (the slimmest part of your legs) and they offer a personal touch to style that can be worn day or night.

For day, pair it with a great fall floral top (florals are huge this fall) and pointed toe flats to help lengthen your leg line…
