2020 Spring Trends for the Kiddos

The Groundhog has spoken and spring is around the corner. This is music to my ears. As much as I love layering my kids in the coolest Vineyard Vines fleeces with Mini Boden joggers, I am so ready to pack those pieces up (to consign next year, obv), and move on to their spring and summer wardrobes.

This spring and summer bring so many fun trends, I cannot wait to dive in and start shopping! 529 Kids Consign here in Old Town is stocked with the most amazing spring pieces right now. Ok let’s get to the trends. I know, I know you are thinking…she has all boys. Don’t worry, I am here to dish on girls too.

Speaking of girls, did you know that you can now shop for your tween at Mint Condition? That’s right, we are bridging the gap. When your daughter grows out of 529, you now have a place to shop and consign. Mint Condition’s tween section starts at size 12 and we carry all of the favorites! 

I just got back from children’s club in New York City and the spring and summer trends are so fun. Here are a few that I love…

Embellishment:

It is still everywhere. Pom poms and tassels are on drawstrings and trim and can be seen on shorts, dresses, tote bags, and more. Think Crew Cuts and Pink Chicken.

Denim:

It’s is always on trend, no matter the season. Denim shorts are updated this spring with frayed hems and seams and sequin details. Brands to look for Mini Boden and Tucker + Tate.

Souvenir Tees:

Yes, you heard that right. A fun graphic tee goes a long way, but one that looks like you were just basking in the Hawaiian sun is even better. I love this trend for boys and girls. Tea Collection and Crew Cuts do this really well.

Cargo pockets:

Uh huh! The oversized utility look is back in softer materials – shorts, joggers, and more – think Boden and Hanna Andersson.

Aloha Shirts:

Yes, these tacky tourist-looking woven shirts are a hit for spring/summer! Brands to look for are Billabong and Hatley.

Megan’s career in retail/merchandising began in the mid nineties standing in front of a woodsy smelling Abercrombie and Fitch. Sporting an oversized plaid flannel and bootcut jeans she said hello to every customer that eagerly walked in to the popular retailer. Little did Megan know that, while creating a perfect “denim wall”and dressing in all of the latest fashion that the lifestyle brand offered she was building the foundation for her fun and exciting career! After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh, Megan managed multiple A&F stores before she moved on to an assistant buyer position in contemporary dresses at the local Arlington based retailer Hecht’s (now Macy’s). She gained an immeasurable amount of knowledge before moving onto a different facet of the business at Calvin Klein Jeans. Megan worked her way from retail coordinator to East-Coast regional manager helping to create the Calvin Klein aesthetic in department stores from Boston to Miami. After her first son Ethan was born, her position at CKJ was eliminated, due to the harsh economic conditions at the time. This is how 529 was born! Megan quickly began to see how fast Ethan was growing out of his clothing. She knew other moms had the same amount of adorable “gently-worn” clothing piling up. Combining her love of retail and her obsession with dressing Ethan gave her the idea to try and sell this clothing. 529 became a popular “pop-up” shop in the Alexandria area and once the following was big enough, a brick and mortar store in historic Old Town. 529 Kids Consign exemplifies who Megan is and what she has learned throughout her career. It’s a warm, well-organized, well- edited boutique that attracts moms from all over the DC metro area. On any given visit to the store you may be greeted by three boys dressed to the nines..they too have the passion.
